Abstract: Using longitudinal data from a cluster-randomized intervention in which rural Pakistani mothers suffering perinatal depression received cognitive behavioural therapy, we find that treatment improves the socio-emotional health of children from birth up to age three. Estimates of a structural model of skills formation based on dynamic latent factors indicate that the mechanism driving this result is an increase in the self-productivity of children’s health.
